Are you planning to travel by air within the next few months? Virgin America's frequent flyer program has given its "founding members" (i.e. me) ten offers of a 20% discount on flights prior to 2/10/10. There are a few black-out dates, but there are still travel days around the holidays. You must book through this page to get the discount:

http://www.virginamerica.com/va/ftf.do?cid=EM_elevate0984&refId=25a7b212157e2932dac475f6ae87fc29

First come first serve. Feel free to pass this on to anyone you know. If all ten offers are taken, I get a free flight.
A bald man with a wooden leg gets invited to a Halloween Party. He doesn't know what costume to wear to hide his head and his leg, so he writes to a costume company to explain his problem.

A few days later he receives a parcel with the following note:

Dear Sir,
Please find enclosed a pirate's outfit. The spotted handkerchief will cover your bald head and, with your wooden leg, you will be just right as a pirate.
Very truly yours,
Acme Costume Co.

The man thinks this is terrible because they have emphasized his wooden leg. He writes an angry letter of complaint. A week goes by and he receives another parcel and a note, which says:

Dear Sir,
Please find enclosed a monk's costume. The long robe will cover your wooden leg and, with your bald head, you should really look the part.
Very truly yours,
Acme Costume Co.

Now the man is really upset since they have gone from emphasizing his wooden leg to emphasizing his bald head, so again he writes the company another nasty letter of complaint..

The next day he gets a small Parcel and a note, which reads:... )
Quentin Tarantino is one Ingloriously brilliant Basterd.

When all the payments come in, we will have raised $586 (minus Paypal admin fees) to benefit the Choirloft. Hooray us!

I've contacted the winners already in comments. If you placed something up for bid in the auction, please check the auction post to see if your offer received a bid. You will not necessarily receive direct notification by email, as I was the one who posted most of the offers in comments. If your item was won, please send me your contact info at zzzpdiduda at yahoo dot com so that I can put you in touch with the winner. Please don't assume that I have your contact info, even if I know you well. I'm just not that organized. :)

Thanks to everyone who participated!

THE AUCTION HAS ENDED! Thanks to everyone who participated!

As friends of the Choirloft know, the folks who live there must find and move to a new home this summer. The actual residents of the Choirloft include [livejournal.com profile] deedeebythebay, [livejournal.com profile] coyote3502, [livejournal.com profile] ladynanook, three children, two cats and four chickens. Many more of us, though, have viewed the Choirloft as a second home due to the generosity of its residents. Over the years that they've lived in their rented home in Oakland, the residents of the Choirloft have hosted "orphans'" Thanksgiving dinners, holiday celebrations, rituals and other events, too many to count. They have also hosted the bi-monthly Wine and Song gathering. The Choirloft door has always been open to the Bay Area poly community.

In order to move, the folks at the Choirloft must come up with -- at minimum -- first month's rent and last month's rent (or one or the other), security deposit and moving expenses. Money is very tight right now. They could really use some help.

Fortunately, the folks who love the Choirloft and its habitues have pitched in to help -- and so can you, by buying the goods and services that the talented and generous members of the Choirloft community are offering here. Please help us ensure that our second home can find a new home soon.

How the auction works:

The offers are set forth in the comments to this post. Please make your bid in a reply to the comment that you're interested in. I've included a "test" offer and bid below, in the first comment, to show you how it's done. Offers will be kept open for one week. The highest bidder gets the item/service. I am including a Paypal link below for payments. All proceeds will go to the Choirloft.

After the auction is over:

I will provide you and the offeror with each others' contact info. The offeror will contact you directly and make the necessary arrangements. I will be happy to help if there is any problem in communications.

Want to donate goods or services?

It's not too late! )

Here's the Paypal link for auction payments. If you want to donate money directly, I encourage you to use this link as well!

Please re-post this to your friends lists if you'd like to help!

Also, please re-visit this site often! I have not yet added in all of the offers that I've received, and I expect to be adding more on a daily basis.

Let's make this work.
I've gotten some great responses to my post about an auction to benefit the Choirloft. Hooray, you guys! The only problem is that I want to buy everything that's going to be offered for auction. Must. Restrain. Self. On the other hand, I can't think of a better cause.

A few details:

Auction protocol

I plan to start the auction Monday here in LJ. I have already asked those who are making offers to clarify things like number of hours (for services), starting prices, item descriptions. Please be sure to include shipping costs in your starting price, or specify "free shipping". Unless you object, I will describe each of your offers in separate comments to the main auction post. I will list your LJ name as the offeror unless you prefer anonymity. In pondering this last bit, please consider that not everyone would bid on having Anonymous babysit their kids or muck around inside their computers.

I intend to keep each offer open for a week. Bids will be made in reply to the individual "offer comments". Highest bidder gets the item/service. I will be including a Paypal link in the auction post both to collect payments and to collect any funds that people want to contribute to the Choirloft.

After the auction

I will provide you and the auction winner with each others' contact info. I ask that you contact your winners directly and make the necessary arrangements. If there are problems, I'm happy to help -- but if you make an offer in this auction, I'm going to assume that you will take primary responsibility for fulfilling any agreement that comes out of it.

It's not too late to donate items, goods or services! You can contact me here with offers, questions, or suggestions here in comments or at zzzpdiduda at yahoo dot com. [If your offers or suggestions have to do with a hot night in Vegas, a vat of vanilla pudding and the Cal marching band, please send them to my email address, not here. This is NOT that kind of auction post. :)].
Early next week, I will be commencing an auction on behalf of the Choirloft. As friends of the Choirloft know, the folks who live there must find and move to a new home this summer. This means they must come up with -- at minimum -- first month's rent, last month's rent, security deposit and moving expenses. Money is very tight. They could really use the help of their extended family-of-choice.

Most of us don't have a lot of excess cash to spare. What we DO have, though, are things which we no longer need but which others might
treasure. We have skills. We have shelves full of crafting materials. Some of us even have time.

So:

--Would you be willing to knit a scarf to be auctioned off on behalf of the Choirloft? To make a custom piece of clothing? Beadwork, a hand-crafted photo frame, a quilt, a set of greeting cards? handmade chocolates?

--Could you spare four hours of babysitting? a home-cooked dinner for two, to be delivered to the winner? Your skills at computer repair, accounting, handyperson services?

--Perhaps you have a full set of Harry Potter books that you're ready to pass on? A piece of jewelry that never quite suited you? A pair of kick-ass boots that you've meant to sell on Ebay but never got around to it?

These are just ideas. If you're interested in participating, please let me know in comments what you might contribute and what might be an appropriate starting price. I would also welcome other ideas for auctionable goods and services. I will ask for more specific descriptions of items this weekend when I design the auction post or site.

The Choirloft has been a second home to so many of us. Please join me in helping to ensure that our second home finds its new home soon.

[Choirloft folk: please feel free to point the Choirloft community or your friends lists to this post!]

And here's your birthday present: I will promise NOT to sing this to you. :)

As our mutual friends know well, my singing makes the dogs howl. I fear what it might do to you.
Happy birthday, [personal profile] mactavish !!  You brighten the lives of everyone around you (both human and canine. :)).
